'Tis the season to be radical

‘Tis the season of goodwill towards all people. This is when we open our hearts and wallets with more generosity. We donate to our favorite charities; we give toys and warm coats to those in need and we write holiday greetings to the people we care about.

But this moment also calls on us to be radically generous and open-hearted towards those who think differently than we do. You may not want to have conversations across the political divide, and that’s okay. A radical act of generosity can also be speaking with more kindness within your own circles about those you do not understand or agree with. (In a different era this was not such a radical act!)

It is easy to forget our shared humanity when everything is so uncertain and volatile. But the fact remains that at our core, we all laugh and love and cry for similar reasons, and we all seek dignity and meaning in our lives.

Be radically generous of spirit towards those who think differently than you. Identify your comfort zone and then take a little step beyond it. This will have a greater constructive impact than you might imagine.
